Here are the assignments due before our "First Friday" together. These readings and activities will help you to become as familiar as possible with keys aspects of each approach:

  1. Alternate Assessment Mandates and Tools
  2. Local State Alternate Assessment Model

This will take you a few hours to explore and examine. It will be helpful to chunk your approach to studying these resources into manageable time elements. This assignment takes the place of your second Sunday morning.

Reading & Reflection #1: Due Thursday, August 4th: Alternate Assessment Mandates and Tools

a. Explore Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). DLM's goal is to create an assessment and instructional resource for kids with significant disabilities that aligns with the Common Core curriculum. On the Dynamic Learning Map website, read the Professional Development Section and look closely at the pre-made modules. Watch the following video, which describes Who are the Students with the Most Significant Cognitive Disabilities.

b. Complete the assignment by answering the reflection questions to the following articles, using Padlet linked here for discussion posts.

Reading & Reflection #2: Due Thursday, August 4th: Local State Alternate Assessment Model

a. After looking at National models of alternate assessments, it is important for you to become familiar with your own states materials and practices. We have a great mix of students from different states to compare tools, methodology and application in statewide assessments for learners with significant cognitive disabilities. Below are the links to different states alternate assessment materials. Explore the website for your state, and compare it to another state.
.

b. Reflect on your states findings on Padlet, and compare it to another states practices, with the following questions in mind:
  • What are the strengths you see within your state's approach to alternate assessment?
  • What are your concerns?
  • What questions does this raise for you?

For class: Please be prepared to discuss your thoughts about how assessment might drive meaningful instruction.
